These monstrosities were once among the psychic-powered variant of Paragon Protectors, but they've since suffered extreme mental corruption from exposure to the Awakened and as a result was forcibly grafted into their psionic network and mutated.

This of course causes the immediate insanity of the Paragon Protector, who will then in-turn subsume all nearby fellow Crey, turning them into mindless thralls.
